A Classic Embodying the “Less-Is-More” Spirit
LENA is a 1948 Swedish Folkboat, believed to have been built by Matt Selden and originally imported to San Francisco. About twenty years ago she underwent a careful rebuild in Idaho, and since then she has enjoyed dedicated maintenance periods at Cutts & Case Shipyard before heading back to Annapolis waters. Her hull is tight and fair, with all seams from gunwale to garboard filled with epoxy. The entire hull was also wooded and re-varnished just three years ago. She carries a charming Navigator Stove Works brand wood stove and is powered by a reliable 6 hp Tohatsu.
But LENA is more than a well-maintained classic — she carries the spirit and purpose of the Nordic Folkboat, one of the most influential small cruising designs ever created.
A Design Born of Purpose, Not Fashion
The iconic Nordic Folkboat emerged in 1941 from a Scandinavian Sailing Association design competition held in the midst of WWII. With Europe in turmoil and Sweden still neutral, weekend racing on inland lakes had become an important source of morale. The contest sought a one-design boat that could race, cruise, gunkhole, and — above all — be affordable. Professional and amateur designers from across Scandinavia contributed designs and ideas, and the Folkboat was formed from the strongest qualities of the top submissions.
From its inception, the Folkboat stood apart. This vessel was never about raw speed or modern conveniences. As seasoned sailors know, the most satisfying sailing experience is subtle — something that cannot be measured in knots but felt in a well balanced helm. Folkboats remind us that simplicity is not a compromise; it is a path to deeper enjoyment of the present moment.
LENA captures all of this classic, traditional heritage while offering the benefit of long-term, expert care. She is in need of some restoration work, varnish is important maintenance and there’s a mast repair or two in there. She’s priced accordingly and affordably for the sailor who falls in love with her traditional design, who desires a rewarding sailing experience, enjoys the nuances of a wooden boat and can put in the necessary maintenance and seasonal care this lovely lady deserves.
She is ready for her next steward.
